The Pittsburgh Steelers always find themselves crashing in the same car. They have a quarterback problem they don't seem to be able to fix, but the Seattle Seahawks might be in a position to help the Steelers do that.
Part of the issue is that, just like in 2025, Pittsburgh is waiting on Aaron Rodgers to give them an answer on whether he will play. What must be frustrating for Steelers fans is 1) why does the team keep letting a somewhat washed-up future Pro Football Hall of Famer dictate the team's future, and 2) Pittsburgh simply needs to get younger at the position.
The Steelers current quarterback depth chart features veteran Mason Rudolph, never expected to be a long-term QB1, and 2025 sixth-round draft pick Will Howard, a project with questionable arm strength. Pittsburgh should consider acquiring Jalen Milroe from Seattle and helping him develop into a starter.
Pittsburgh Steelers should try to acquire Jalen Milroe from the Seattle Seahawks
To be sure, Milroe, like Howard, is a project, albeit one with elite arm strength, and is blazingly fast when he runs. Howard could never match those traits. What Milroe needs to get better at is the opportunity to play, and that isn't going to happen with the Seahawks.
Sam Darnold just helped Seattle win a Super Bowl, and he is clearly not going anywhere anytime soon. His immediate backup is veteran Drew Lock. Lock hasn't grown into a full-time starter in the NFL, and is likely never going to, but he is a safe QB2 on a team with a good roster. Milroe is simply an athletic, but unneeded, piece.
If general manager John Schneider is ever thinking of trading Milroe, now is the time to do it. The quarterback class in 2026 is relatively weak, as was the free agent class. Milroe has upside and was a third-round pick just last year.
Should the Steelers offer a third-round choice for Jalen Milroe, while eschewing the idea of bringing Rodgers back, Pittsburgh's long-term future could be much brighter. Pittsburgh also has the draft capital to give Seattle a third-rounder, as the Steelers have three third-round selections in 2026.
Pittsburgh has been reported to have given Aaron Rodgers a deadline to decide whether he will return next season by the NFL draft. Even if he returns, he is only a one-year rental, and the Steelers are likely to run into the same situation with him next year, too.
Instead of trying to find a quarterback in the draft, if Rodgers does not offer his 2026 services by the time the draft starts, the Steelers could, in essence, spend one of their third-round picks on getting Jalen Milroe, a quarterback who has no path to playing for the Seattle Seahawks. The move would be a win-win for all.
