Seahawks icon Tyler Lockett's next team is painfully obvious

Everyone can see it coming.

Tyler Lockett, all-around great human being and all-time Seattle Seahawks icon, might be done with his NFL career. He asked for, and was granted, his release from his latest team, the Tennessee Titans. What's next might be obvious for Lockett.

If he wants to continue to play, ideally, he would go to a team that is a contender. Lockett isn't a WR1 or WR2 at this stage of his career, but he is a great veteran voice in the locker room and can provide some valuable reps in the correct system.

Could that be with the Seahawks? Maybe, but it shouldn't be. Seattle has a completely new system with offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, and many reps see just two receivers on the field. Those are mostly going to be Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp. WR3 would be Tory Horton.

Former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett should be scooped up by the Las Vegas Raiders

It isn't like adding Lockett back to the team wouldn't be great, but there is no need to do so. He isn't going to see many snaps. He might be added simply as a guy to have in the locker room on a fairly young roster.

More likely, Lockett will find his way to the Las Vegas Raiders. Pete Carroll is the head coach with Vegas, and while he doesn't have full control over the roster like he did when he worked for the Seahawks, he definitely has input. This is proven by the Raiders' previous addition of so many former Seattle players.

Quarterback Geno Smith, himself, of course, a former Seahawks starting quarterback, might play better if he has Lockett on the team. Sometimes, just having someone you can trust off the field makes things work.

Las Vegas also has former Seahawks Jamal Adams, Stone Forsythe, and Jon Rhattigan on the roster. That hasn't helped the team be good, mind you. The Raiders are fairly dreadful and are 2-5. Would acquiring Tyler Lockett suddenly improve them?

Not on the field. But the veteran wide receiver, and Hall of Fame human being, could help reset the culture. That didn't work with the Titans because Lockett was a new face on a team undergoing a lot of turnover. In Vegas, he would be a familiar face, and a welcome one.

A team can sign Tyler Lockett as soon as Wednesday. If he wants to keep playing, some team will probably sign him. That almost certainly won't be the Seattle Seahawks. It could be the Seahawks South, otherwise known as the Las Vegas Raiders.
