Andre Carter II has bounced around the league quite a bit since going undrafted in 2023. Since then, he has been with five different organizations and is currently looking for a sixth. That includes the Seattle Seahawks, who reportedly visited with head coach Mike Macdonald's team on Monday.
What Carter's visit shows isn't that he is an elite player, but that the team isn't done looking at edge rushers who might help the team defend its championship from last season. Carter might not be the answer, but some other player might be.
What the 6'6" and 256-pound edge rusher, who has a decent level of athleticism, would bring to the Seahawks isn't overly clear. He likely wouldn't be an upgrade over depth pieces such as Connor O'Toole or Jared Ivey. He certainly wouldn't be better than Derick Hall, Uchenna Nwosu, DeMarcus Lawrence, or Dante Fowler Jr.
Seattle Seahawks might have bigger things afoot than having Andre Carter II visit
In the two seasons he has seen real games (2023 and 2024), Carter has been involved in only three tackles on defense and just one-half of a sack in 15 games. Something about him is enticing to Seattle, though, or the team wouldn't have had Carter in on a visit. He also visited with the San Francisco 49ers before arriving in the Pacific Northwest.
Maybe importantly, he is only 26 years old, and he would provide a bit of youth to a position group that is a bit old. Lawrence and Fowler are well into their 30s, and Nwosu is almost there. All three should still be good in 2026, but how much beyond is unknown.
Perhaps understanding that, general manager John Schneider is going to take a look at several edge rushers. The team missed out on Jadeveon Clowney, but he had legitimate reasons for signing with the Houston Texans recently. Clowney has a home in Houston, so he wanted to play close to where he lived.
Other free agent edge rushers who would have a better path to reps with Seattle include Joey Bosa and Leonard Floyd. Both of those guys are past 30 years old, too. While Seattle has a good foursome at the position, adding another is not out of the question. Seattle might look to draft one or two edge rushers high in the 2027 NFL Draft, but another veteran on a one-year deal for 2026 is logical.
None of this means the Seattle Seahawks will sign an edge rusher or even Andre Carter II, who is more likely to find a home on a practice squad somewhere than on the active roster when the season begins, but 12s might expect more reports about players visiting. One of the great things about John Schneider is that he will never stop looking for ways to make the team better.
