A rough start.

Training camp was going well for Seattle Seahawks rookie running back Jadarian Price until they weren't. He was trending toward proving that Seattle's spending a first-round choice on him was a wise move, as he was an explosive runner, could catch passes, and was solid in pass protection. He was much like his Notre Dame teammate, Jeremiyah Love.

But Love and Price have another thing in common, other than both being first-round choices in 2026: Each is missing practices due to an injury. For Price, he has suffered from "upper leg soreness" and missed a week of practices, lowering the chances he will be the Week 1 starter.

Love's injury might be more severe. After complaining of ankle soreness, the team discovered that the running back had a high ankle sprain, and he will sit out the rest of the preseason. Those kinds of injuries are tricky. Love could return before the start of the season and play quite a bit. Or he could miss a month or more.

Which team is more affected by their rookie running back being hurt gets complicated. The Seahawks have an excellent overall roster, and a defense that has proven to win championships. The offense hopes to run the ball quite a bit, but needs good players to do so. Price will hopefully be ready for Week 1, but Zach Charbonnet probably won't be after suffering a knee injury last season.

Seattle should be able to absorb a potential loss of Price more than the Cardinals can miss Love because Arizona is a bad team. Their roster underwhelms, they have iffy quarterback play, and they are once again starting over with a new coaching staff. The NFC West takes no prisoners either, and while the Seattle Seahawks are very good, so are the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams.

The Cardinals need Jeremiyah Love, and, like Price, maybe he returns quickly, but his ability to turn quickly and, if he reaches the open field, to outrun defenders is in question currently. Arizona's already limited offense would be even more limited without Love.

Again, Love could return by Week 1, or, more importantly, by Week 2. That is the first time Jadarian Price will suit up against his former teammate as the Seahawks travel to play the Cardinals at State Farm Stadium. For the players, the hope is that each will play and they can compare notes afterward. For 12s, no matter if Love plays or not, hopefully Seattle wins in a blowout.
