One step up.

The Seattle Seahawks chose quarterback Jalen Milroe in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, but the move was one more about hope than a known outcome. Seattle had signed fellow QBs Sam Darnold and Drew Lock in free agency, too.

Milroe had no real path to being the starting quarterback for his new team, and he didn't truly have a path to being QB2 either. He still doesn't, but his NFL career is sliding back quickly. He might need to move to a new team to have a chance to play, and that new team could be the New England Patriots, Seattle's Week 1 opponent in the 2026 season.

Darnold just helped the Seahawks win a Super Bowl, of course. Unless he is injured or suffers a massive dip in form, he is going to remain QB1 for many years to come. Lock is a solid backup with starting experience, and while he has just a year left on his contract, he will probably stay in Seattle for the foreseeable future.

One option for the Seattle Seahawks could be to send Jalen Milroe to the New England Patriots

The Patriots also have a long-term starting quarterback in Drake Maye. Maye was the third overall pick in 2025, well ahead of Milroe. New England's issue is that their presumed backup, Tommy DeVito, isn't really the kind of player New England would want to have step in for Maye if QB1 has to miss a substantial amount of time.

Milroe could develop into that, though. He also offers the kind of dual-threat capability that Maye has as well. Plus, New England clearly likes that kind of QB because the team also chose Joe Milton III in 2025, though the Pats gave up on Milton quickly and traded him to the Dallas Cowboys.

Milroe should be better than Milton, however. The Alabama quarterback was more productive in college, though he needs to work on his decision-making from play to play, while Milton struggled with inconsistency at the University of Tennessee.

The New England Patriots looking for a new backup for Drake Maye should be assumed, and the Seattle Seahawks' Jalen Milroe makes a lot of sense. With more reps as a QB2 in practice than as QB3, Milroe could improve quickly. He's also, by all accounts, a good person, and he would be terrific in the New England locker room.

The Seahawks could eventually miss Milroe if Lock leaves in free agency next offseason, but the former getting a better chance at playing would help the player. Seattle would get draft capital back, potentially a late-mid-round selection, to add to the team's massive projected haul in 2027. Currently, the Seahawks are expected to have 12 picks next year.
