If a kicker were ever to win a Super Bowl MVP, Jason Myers just came the closest, because until late in the second half, he was the only offensive production the Seattle Seahawks could manage. Thankfully, Drake Maye and the New England Patriots offense couldn't crawl toward the end zone for the entire first half.
Sam Darnold, with the help of Kenneth Walker III, managed to drive the field several times, but was not able to produce a touchdown until the fourth quarter. Up until that point, Myers had to make five field goals to keep the scoreboard in the Seahawks' favor while the Patriots floundered.Â
Myers' five field goals would have won the game for Seattle even without Darnold's touchdown and Uchenna Nwosa's pick-six, despite New England scoring all of their 13 points in the final frame. That's part of what made his performance special, and he also made Super Bowl history along the way.
Jason Myers powers the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl win underneath the swift kick of his leg
Only four kickers have made four field goals in a Super Bowl before Sunday night, and Myers just surpassed all of them. Most recently, in 2024, another of the NFL's best kickers today, Harrison Butker, sailed through four field goals to help propel the Kansas City Chiefs to a 25-22 win over the San Francisco 49ers.
Butker is still kicking today, as is Jake Elliot, who also made four field goals in the Philadelphia Eagles' 2025 Super Bowl win, a 40-22 blowout over Butker's Chiefs. Then there were 49ers kicker Ray Wersching in 1982 and Green Bay Packers kicker Don Chandler in 1968, both of whom also made four field goals in Super Bowls.Â
Myers, however, didn't make just four, but five, before Darnold and the Seahawks' defense managed two touchdowns. Myers was on his way to a field goal shutout, though — wouldn't that have been something to ink in the history books?
On top of the record, Myers' 41-yarder in the third quarter that tied the Super Bowl record, also made him the first player in NFL history to hit 200 points. Had Kenneth Walker not rushed for 135 yards, an argument for Myers as the Super Bowl MVP would have been legitimate.Â
Myers wasn't just clutch for the Seahawks in the Super Bowl, though. He was clutch all season long, breaking a couple of other records in the process. One record for total season points, one for most field goals in a Super Bowl, and another for his six field goals made against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 15, which also set a new regular-season record.
Myers went 41 for 48 for the year — regular and postseason combined — resulting in a 85.4% mark. It was quite the season for the decade-old veteran, and he capped it off with what is likely the best game he's ever had, given the high-stakes nature of it all.Â
