Leonard Williams might be 32 years old, but the Seattle Seahawks don't care. So much so that the team reportedly agreed to an extension with the elite defensive lineman for three years after the 2026 season that will pay Williams as much as $90 million, with $56 million guaranteed.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported the extension amount, and Adam Schefter followed that with the guaranteed amount. Ultimately, that is what matters most, as the player knows exactly how much he will make in the least amount.
Some general football fans or national pundits might see the dollar amount and Williams' relatively advanced age for a football player and think he was overpaid. Far from it. Those who truly know about the Seahawks, which is the organization and its fans, understand how valuable Williams is to the elite defense.

Williams isn't just a great defensive lineman on the team in the Pacific Northwest, but he is arguably the best D-lineman in the NFL. A recent poll by ESPN of NFL executives, scouts, and coaches thinks so. The poll had Williams at the No. 1 lineman in the league.
He is a force against the run and the pass, a leader on a team that has a lot of them but needs Williams' sage wisdom, and is like having a second coach on the field. Anyone who watched the recent episode of Hard Knocks got a glimpse of that. After a poor practice, Williams went to head coach Mike Macdonald, and the player asked the coach what he needed to tell his teammates.
The Seahawks traded for Williams in the middle of the 2023 season, hoping the move would turn Seattle into a playoff team that year. It didn't happen, but the fault did not lie with the player. In 2024, Williams helped push the defense overall to greatness in Macdonald's first year as the head coach.
In 2025, Williams led an elite defensive line that resembled that of the best of the Legion of Boom years, and the line helped a historically fantastic defense lead the team to a Super Bowl title. That likely wouldn't have happened without Leonard Williams being on the roster.
He makes his team better, and his teammates next to him. 2024 first-round draft pick Byron Murphy II has the skills to be great, for instance, but with Williams imparting knowledge of how to be his best, Murphy might not be as good as he already is.
As far as overpaying Williams because of his age, he is 32 years old, of course, but he stays extremely healthy. In his 11 seasons in the NFL, he has missed more than one game in a season just once. In other words, he likely will stay healthy and productive for the Seattle Seahawks through the 2029 season, which is what he is signed through after agreeing to his new extension.
