A new name?

Bobby Wagner is no longer a part of the Seattle Seahawks, but he will always be connected to the organization that drafted him in 2012. That said, if Wagner does return in some manner to the team in the Pacific Northwest, he might be going by a different name, at least jokingly.

That's because Wagner recently gave the commencement speech for the 2026 graduates at Utah State University, Wagner's alma mater, and received an honorary doctoral degree from the college. (The coincidental part is that Wagner is still working through a post-graduate degree and might one day be an actual doctor.)

In his speech, he said, "If you didn’t know, my name is now Dr. Bobby Wagner. And to any family members here, you need to update my name in your phone. It’s ‘Dr.’ now. I will no longer respond to ‘Bobby.’ It’s Dr. only."

Seattle Seahawks icon Bobby Wagner has a new name - sort of

How amazing would it be for general manager John Schneider to re-sign the linebacker, or for head coach Mike Macdonald to hire Wagner, if he wanted to be hired, as part of the coaching staff, and for the Seahawks icon to be called "Doctor." While that might create some confusion, it would also clearly add some hysterical moments to an otherwise tense sport.

As far as the linebacker's near future, though, who knows what that might hold. Maybe even Wagner doesn't. For the last two seasons, he played for the Washington Commanders. He is a free agent this offseason, and if he has received offers, they haven't been high enough for the icon to sign with a team.

He is still an elite tackler, and great against the run, and he can even pressure quarterbacks at times, but he isn't as fast at almost 36 years old as he was at 23 because he is, well...a human being. He's never been excellent in pass coverage, and he's even worse now.

Could he still help a team win? Almost surely. That just won't be with the Seattle Seahawks, at least not as a player. Macdonald's scheme requires its inside linebackers to be good covering running backs and tight ends, and Wagner simply wouldn't be a good fit now.

He will always be fondly remembered by 12s, however, and he should be. Dr. Bobby Wagner wasn't simply the best inside linebacker in Seattle Seahawks history; he was also a fantastic person off the field. While the former may no longer be the case, the latter will stay true forever.
