After the Seattle Seahawks terminated offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb this offseason (literally a day after the season ended), offensive line coach Scott Huff's tenure seemed likely to end as well. Grubb and Huff had worked together at the University of Washington, and Grubb had brought Huff with him when he became Seattle's OC in 2024.
Huff suffered the same fate as previous Seahawks offensive line coaches, though. The O-line underperformed and was a big reason why the offense overall could not reach maximum efficiency. Of course, a good offensive coordinator and a good O-line coach can work together to limit the awfulness of a bad group of players, but only so much.
Huff was reportedly let go by Seattle recently, and he was replaced by veteran offensive line coach John Benton. Benton most recently worked with new Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak with the New Orleans Saints. He has worked in the NFL in some capacity, mostly as an offensive line coach or an assistant O-line coach, since 2003.
Seattle Seahawks hire a new offensive line coach and new quarterbacks coach
Benton also worked with Klint's father, Gary, with the Houston Texans from 2006 through 2013. He was the San Francisco 49ers offensive line coach from 2017 through 2020. If anyone is going to find a way to immediately improve Seattle's line, even though the overall unit is not going to be extremely talented, it is Benton.
Seattle also reportedly hired a new quarterbacks coach, Andrew Janocko. He replaces Charles London, who wasn't fired but took the same position with the New York Jets this offseason. Janocko also worked with Klint Kubiak in New Orleans, though he was limited in what he could do as starter Derek Carr was only available for 10 games.
Janocko also worked with Kubiak in 2021 when Kubiak was the offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, and Janocko was the QB coach. In other words, both coaches should know what the other needs to be successful. A huge question, however, is whether general manager John Schneider will be aggressive in attempting to fix the Seahawks' biggest issue.
That would be along the interior of the offensive line. Will he choose to draft a guard high in the draft? That seems unlikely based on his draft history. If he doesn't find the pieces to help Kubiak and Benton, specifically, then all three new offensive coaches could be doomed by Schneider's personnel decisions.
