Seahawks might be better off as Wild Card team (but not why you think)

Could it be more beneficial for the Seattle Seahawks top enter the playoffs as a Wild Card team?

The Seattle Seahawks have been a very good team this year and are one of the most well-rounded clubs in the NFL. Sure, it's not been perfect, but many of the offseason moves that this team made have paid off already.

And for the second year in a row, the team will have a winning record under head coach Mike Macdonald, who is clearly one of the better head coaches in the league. Now 9-3 on the season, Seattle joins LA and San Francisco as nine-win teams in the competitive NFC West.

The Rams did lose to the Carolina Panthers in Week 13, so the division race just got a lot more interesting. When you dig a bit deeper, though, the Seahawks actually might be better off not hosting a playoff game and going on the road when the postseason begins.

Seahawks are simply a better football team playing on the road than at home

The Seattle Seahawks are 19-10 in the Mike Macdonald era and are currently on pace to finish with 13 wins this year, which would be an improvement over the 10-7 season in 2024. Last year, Seattle was 7-1 in their away games and just 3-6 playing at home, which is downright baffling.

Here in 2025, Seattle is currently 5-1 away and 4-2 at home. If we combine these splits and lump in offensive points per game, this is how the home-away splits have looked for the Mike Macdonald Seahawks since 2024:

Away: 12-2, 25.6 PPG
Home: 7-8, 24.4 PPG

When a trend like this has continued for well over a year, it becomes a part of a team's identity and a defining aspect of who they are on the field. While it may seem like a stretch, this could be a huge reason why Seattle might be better off traveling in the playoffs. They have won less than half of their home games, which is a rare occurrence.

In fact, the 'norm' in the NFL would be if these home-away splits were totally flipped. We may never truly know why the Seattle Seahawks are much better playing away from Lumen Field, but not winning the NFC West could actually be a good thing here, and I am sure head coach Mike Macdonald is aware of this wacky trend he's established with the franchise.

Seattle plays three of the final five games of the season away, so perhaps a 12-5 record is the floor for this team in 2025.
