Seahawks’ most valuable trade asset might not even be a player

A huge move that shouldn't happen.

The Seattle Seahawks aren't afraid of making moves that general manager John Schneider believes will help his team win. The one trade that could be made that would bring in the most value, but hasn't ever been done and shouldn't be by Seattle, is for John Schneider to trade, well...himself.

An NFL general manager can be traded, just as a head coach can be. Sean Payton, for instance, was traded to the Denver Broncos by the New Orleans Saints. And those kinds of moves don't come cheap for many reasons.

Denver gave the Saints a first-round selection and a second-rounder in return for the coach and a third-round choice. Gaining a successful head coach is almost as good a move as taking a high-end quarterback early in the draft. Successful seasons follow, just ask the Broncos.

Seattle Seahawks could trade general manager John Schneider (but should never pull off the move)

John Schneider should be among the most valuable assets in the NFL. He is the only general manager in the history of the league to win two Super Bowls with different rosters and a different coaching staff for both. Pete Carroll was great for a while, and Mike Macdonald is great now. The throughline is Schneider.

Of course, a wise organization would never give away a GM of Schneider's quality. Even a new ownership group for the Seahawks, and one will soon be in place after Jody Allen and the Paul Allen Trust finally sells the team, shouldn't want to give away the one person they know can win titles.

But what would it take to get John Schneider? One first-round selection wouldn't be enough, surely. Multiple first-rounders, and maybe a handful of other draft choices. That's when things would get really weird.

While the Seattle Seahawks would lose the best general manager in franchise history, and one of the best in the history of the sport, they would gain enough draft picks to help build future success. Meanwhile, Schneider would be going to a team that just gutted its future drafts in order to acquire him. He wouldn't want that.

Thankfully, the reality is that likely no general manager will ever be traded, and John Schneider definitely won't be. He is a potential Pro Football Hall of Famer as an executive. Check that, he should definitely be in Canton one day, but as a member of the Seahawks.
