Why the Seahawks' quarterback depth is shockingly the best in team history

Coach K has to like what he sees

Yes, we all know the adage, "If you have two starters, you don't have any." That's not the case for the Seattle Seahawks. The number one guy is locked in, but it's a luxury to have not one, but two more players who can step in if needed. That's certainly how things look so far through Day 3 of training camp.

The Seahawks still have a few questions about their starting lineup. Most teams do heading into training camp, so that's not exactly a big deal. For Seattle, the fact that the most pressing questions are on the offensive line is a problem. The fact that there is nothing close to an emerging candidate at either center or right guard is, shall we say, worrisome.

Yes, it's critical for O-line coach John Benton to get the line sorted out. More than any other group, the offensive line has to work as a unit. They don't have time to react and make up ground. But it's still early. The Seahawks have already identified their starter at the position I'm focused on here. And happily for them - and the 12s - they have two strong options to back up number 1.

The Seattle Seahawks have their best quarterback depth ever in 2025

Before you go off on a tirade that peak-Russell Wilson was far better than Sam Darnold will ever be, please read that again. I'm not saying Seattle has their best quarterback ever. Although if Darnold plays like he did for the vast majority of 2024, we could have an argument there.

I'm saying that the Seahawks have the best answers to step into the role in case Darnold is injured. Or, you know, plays like he did in Week 18 or their playoff loss. Seattle can't afford more than a few weeks of play at that level. I don't believe it will come to that at all, but injuries can certainly happen.

Nor am I saying that Drew Lock is the best backup QB the Seahawks have ever had. Geno Smith was clearly better. After starting three games for an injured Russell Wilson in 2021, he kept the starting job when he and Lock competed head-to-head in 2022's training camp. That's not to say that Lock isn't a capable player. Just that at that stage of their careers, Geno was better.

The key to my assertion isn't Darnold or Lock. Yes, I have my reservations about Sam, but I think the gamble will pay off. Darnold should rank in the upper echelon of signal-callers again this season. Lock is a quality player as well, and can certainly be relied on as a backup if needed. Lock takes a lot of heat, but he's never had a season with more interceptions than touchdowns.

No, the key to the Seahawks' depth is the guy who's playing with the third-string unit...for now. From the day he arrived in Seattle, third-round draft pick Jalen Milroe has shown that he is dedicated to improving his skills with every drill, every dropback, every pass. You tell me, does this sound like a guy who demands the very best from himself?

No matter how good he looks in camp, he may not press for the number one job in the preseason. But there is no way Jalen Milroe won't be in the conversation as the backup for the Seahawks. Maybe it will take him to midseason. But that shows just how deep the QB room is this year in Seattle.
