Seattle Seahawks shouldn't let this former player get away twice

The Seattle Seahawks had a much better offensive line in 2025, which is one reason the team was able to win a title. The line wasn't the reason for Super Bowl glory, but for once, the unit wasn't a reason the team couldn't meet lofty expectations.

Still, Seattle could have an even better offensive line and use upgrades at two positions: Center and right guard. Anthony Bradford is likely to man RG again, though he is entering the final year of his rookie deal. Jalen Sundell will probably be the starting center.

But what if the Seahawks could right a wrong from four seasons ago and bring back Ethan Pocic, a player Seattle chose in the second round of 2017 and then ultimately gave up on far too soon? Pocic has played for the Cleveland Browns since 2022, but he is currently a free agent.

Seattle Seahawks should ponder on bringing back Ethan Pocic

The risk with any team signing the center isn't his age. He is about to be 31 years old, but he could play for another few years if he stays healthy. Instead, the concern might be how healthy Pocic's Achilles tendon is, which he tore in Week 14 last season.

The positive news is that, according to NFL insider Adam Schefter, Pocic has been cleared to play for training camp and should be a "full go" well ahead of the season beginning. If he is truly ready to play, Pocic would be an upgrade over Sundell.

Not that Sundell doesn't offer a good amount of athleticism at center, but he can be overpowered, too. That was one of the knocks on Pocic when he played with the Seattle Seahawks from 2017 through 2021, but the player dispelled that myth with some excellent play on an otherwise bad Browns team.

As a full-time starter in Cleveland, he allowed more than 19 pressures in a season just once, and that was in 2024 when he gave up a still solid 28. He's never given up more than three sacks in a year, and not more than two in six of the last seven seasons.

Pocic is an even better run-blocker, too, overcoming what he might lack in brute strength with very good technique. He's also graded well, according to Pro Football Focus (subscription required), ranking as high as No. 3 among centers in 2022 and in the top half of the league two more times with the Browns.

The center also shouldn't be expensive. While Spotrac has his market value at $10.6 million a season over the next three years, that number seems a bit high based on his recent injury. Somewhere around $8 million a season might be closer to what Pocic actually signs for.

$8 million is more than the Seahawks are scheduled to pay Jalen Sundell and backup Olu Oluwatimi in 2026, but Ethan Pocic would be an upgrade, improving the overall offensive line.

Sundell, for instance, started well in the first half of 2025, giving up one quarterback pressure or less in nine of his first 10 games, but then three or more pressures in three of the last six games, including twice in the playoffs. Seattle can do better at the position, and the answer might be Pocic.
