The San Francisco 49ers simply can't quit Trent Williams. It makes sense for the Seattle Seahawks' NFC West rival to hold on to the left tackle as he is very good, has been for a long time, and will be a Pro Football Hall of Famer five years after he retires. But he isn't retiring soon.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Williams and the 49ers agreed to a two-year extension that keeps the left tackle with the team through 2027. The new deal is for $50 million, making him the first non-quarterback to surpass $400 million over the course of his career.
That's a lot of money, of course, and if anyone is truly worth that, playing a sport, it's Williams. Still, the hope from a Seahawks fan standpoint was that the seemingly annual drama between the player and the team would last a year or two more. Now, Williams should be happy.
Seattle Seahawks' NFC West rival San Francisco 49ers make a smart move with Trent Williams
For the last several offseasons, the 49ers have had to deal with Williams voicing his displeasure with his contract, wanting more guaranteed money or something else, hoping to be traded to a different team that would give him more money (or at least more guaranteed), and then he ends up once again playing for the 49ers. Any star player being unhappy can be good for a rival, of course.
Since Williams joined the 49ers in 2020, he has never allowed a sack by a member of the Seahawks. He rarely allows those, as it is, having not given up any sacks to any team in 2023, and only one each in 2021, 2022, and 2024 (though he missed seven games in the former season). He is one of the best players to have ever played his position in league history.
He isn't getting younger, though. By the time his extension is done, he will be 39 years old. Not that age has affected the left tackle much yet, however. He continues to crank out Pro Bowl seasons, as he has only missed the Pro Bowl once since 2012.
The San Francisco 49ers made the correct move, though. Trent Williams is in his late-30s, but no player taking his spot would be as good. The frustrating part is that the Seattle Seahawks will have to keep dealing with a player San Francisco could have done all 12s a favor for and traded. Thankfully, Seattle won the NFC West in 2025 even while San Fran had Williams.
