The Seattle Seahawks have seen a number of players suffer minor injuries so far in training camp, but most have returned. This could also be the case for the team's latest injury, and 12s should hope for the best. The depth chart behind him is exceedingly thin.
Near the end of Monday's practice, linebacker Tyrice Knight suffered some kind of knee injury. The team did some imagining on the knee, but there has been no official word from the Seahawks as far as a timeline of return for Knight. He definitely won't play during the team's first preseason game.
He also missed practice on Tuesday after having to leave on Monday due to being hurt. He also had his knee wrapped, which can sometimes imply something very bad happened.
The Seattle Seahawks could be missing linebacker Tyrice Knight for a bit
Head coach Mike Macdonald, who in his first season with Seattle established the fact that he will not be extremely open about the severity of a player's injury, said that Knight is day-to-day and that the linebacker had a "little tangle with his knee." The team would base any future decisions about what to do with Knight depending on what the imagining showed.
The hope, of course, is that the ailment is minor. Perhaps, if Week 1 of the regular season were being played next week, Tyrice Knight would be able to play. But knee problems can linger, and there is no guarantee that the second-year player will be quick to return.
The problem for the team is that the depth chart behind Knight is exceedingly unproven. The 2024 fourth-round pick turned out to be a surprise starter midway through last season after free agency acquisitions Jerome Baker and Tyrel Dodson turned out to be duds and were either traded or waived. Knight turned out to be quite good quickly.
Immediately behind Knight on the depth chart are Patrick O'Connell and Drake Thomas. O'Connell has been with the team for a couple of years and always looks good in training camp, but hasn't yet played a defensive down in his career.
Thomas also has played in parts of two years with the Seahawks and has logged 41 snaps defensively. He had 13 tackles in 2024. He has good athletic ability and can potentially cover well, so he might be Knight's immediate replacement.
Still, there is a precipitous drop in quality between Tyrice Knight and his backups. The Seattle Seahawks defense would be affected by his loss. Hopefully, the imaging shows little, and Knight is ready to return to practice as soon as next week.
