General manager John Schneider has done a masterful job of building the Seattle Seahawks 2025 roster. He's had a couple of good draft classes in a row, so the team has a mix of players on rookie deals and savvy veterans. The unfortunate part is some veterans might need to leave this offseason.
That is because every team goes through some attrition every season. The way Seattle's roster looks now won't be exactly what it looks like in Week 1 of the 2026 season. One player who might not be on next year's team is defensive tackle Jarran Reed.
Reed probably should have never left Seattle earlier in his career and been a life-long Seahawk. His best seasons have come in a Seahawks uniform. He was gone for two seasons (2021 and 2022, when he played for the Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers, respectively), but was drafted by Seattle in 2016, and returned in 2023.
Jarran Reed might be playing his final games for the Seattle Seahawks
He is now 33 years old, and he might be beginning to slow quite a bit. He has appeared in 12 games and is more of a rotational interior pass rusher than a run-stopper now. The problem is that he began the season well and has diminished.
In Weeks 1 through 3, Reed had a total of nine quarterback pressures, including one sack. He only has eight total pressures in his last nine games, and in seven of those games, he has one pressure or fewer. He is trending toward his fewest quarterback hits since 2019, and his fewest sacks since 2017.
In the 2025 offseason, Reed signed a three-year extension, but one that isn't overly expensive. His cap hit in 2026 is just $7.5 million, and in 2027 it is $9.5 million. He has no guaranteed money either year.
The issue with Jarran Reed isn't money, though; it is production and the need for the Seahawks to get a little younger along the defensive line. Among the key players on the front seven are Reed, Leonard Williams, and DeMarcus Lawrence, all of whom are past 30 years old.
Byron Murphy II is becoming a star, and maybe Rylie Mills will too, but Seattle must do a bit of a revamp before the majority of the defensive line gets too old. Getting old normally means less production, and Jarran Reed is showing that. He might be in his final year of a pretty good career with the Seattle Seahawks.
