As expected, the Seattle Seahawks haven't done much in free agency. They've kept some of their own guys, left others walk, and have only made marginal moves. What's not broken doesn't need fixing, and the reigning Super Bowl champions are still the team to beat in pro football.
That said, you can never have too much depth, especially on defense. Losing Boye Mafe left a void in the pass-rushing rotation, and their alleged interest in trading for Maxx Crosby hints at them not being that satisfied with that unit.
That's why, now that the first wave of free agency is ancient history, they might want to turn to the NFL's list of the top 101 free agents. There are already several options to consider, and the prospect of playing for the defending champions is the strongest pitch out there.
The Seatle Seahawks need to sign another pass-rusher
If John Schneider wants to add another pass rusher, Joey Bosa (No. 47), A.J. Epenesa (No. 53), Haason Reddick (No. 70), Cameron Jordan (No. 75), and Jadeveon Clowney (No. 101) are all still up for grabs.
According to Over The Cap, the Seahawks are sitting on $39.4 million in available cap space. Money shouldn't be a problem for the defending champions, and neither of those options is likely to demand a steep salary.
While they may understandably be reluctant to meet Joey Bosa's reported market value of $13.7 milllion (via Spotrac), veterans like Jordan and Clowney can both be had for under $7 million.
Granted, neither of them would be long-term answers at the position, but with the Seahawks meeting with several pass rushers at the NFL Scouting Combine, they can be stopgaps while they develop any of the rookies they may get in the NFL Draft.
Jordan played just 54 percent of the snaps, yet he still managed to get 10.5 sacks, 15 QB hits, and 15 tackles for loss. Clowney, on the other hand, had 8.5 sacks, 12 tackles for loss and ten QB hits despite playing just 13 games and starting six. They can both still perform at a high level and provide some veteran leadership for Mike Macdonald's team.
There's also A.J. Epenesa, a proven contributor off the bench who knows and embraces his role and who has been a testament to durability in his six years in the league, playing in at least 14 games in every season. Spotrac projects his market value at just $6.4 million.
The Seahawks will likely address this need with a rookie, but with DeMarcus Lawrence mulling retirement and Mafe leaving, there's no reason not to consider one of the best guys still on the board. The slow start to free agency might be a bit frustrating, but there are still multiple avenues to bolster this roster.
