The Seattle Seahawks had to cut their roster to 53 players on Sunday in preparation for the 2026 season. As part of the moves, the team released veteran cornerback Trevon Diggs. What made the cut surprising was that Seattle had raved about how well Diggs had done, including having an interception in preseason Week 3.
The former First-Team All-Pro will once again be a free agent and able to sign with any team that wants him. 12s shouldn't worry about where he will end up, though. Almost certainly, Diggs' next team after being released by the Seahawks is back with the Seahawks.
In his post-cut press conference, general manager John Schneider explained that the team doesn't plan on letting Diggs go easily and that the plan is to re-sign the cornerback to the practice squad as early as Monday. Teams usually have to wait 24 hours after releasing a player to sign him to the practice squad.

Schneider also said that Diggs was a "great guy" and had acclimated to the Seahawks' culture quickly. He is still learning the defense and getting into football shape after not having practiced or played since last season.
The reason for releasing Diggs is fairly straightforward. He will hopefully be a quality veteran who isn't quite ready to help the team win real games, but since he is a vested veteran with four or more years in the league, had he been on the active roster when Seattle played its first game of the season, Diggs' base salary would have become fully guaranteed.
Not that the amount was high, as Diggs only signed for one year and a bit over $1.2 million, but he does still need to prove he can help the team, and he wasn't going to do that in Week 1. His skill level is high, but his health might still be a question. He has had multiple knee surgeries in recent years, and that takes him a bit longer to be in his best form.
The Seattle Seahawks were the first team to give Trevon Diggs a chance to play this preseason. The cornerback had remained unsigned until just over a week ago, when Seattle brought him in for a visit. He clearly did well enough to be signed soon thereafter.
If he's fully healthy, Diggs is the kind of tall cornerback who should be an excellent fit in head coach Mike Macdonald's scheme. He just needs a bit longer to learn the scheme.
While nothing is official yet, the Seahawks had a plan for releasing Diggs, and the player likely understood that. While he is temporarily teamless, his next squad will probably be the same as his last: Seattle. He could then quickly rise to CB3, just behind Devon Witherspoon and Josh Jobe.
