Tua Tagovailoa questions are fueling unexpected Seahawks chatter

Does it make sense?

The Seattle Seahawks might have two too many quarterbacks. The team needs backups, of course, but the hope is that they never play while starter Sam Darnold stays healthy and productive each week. The Miami Dolphins hoped the same for Tua Tagovailoa, but that didn't happen.

According to what Miami general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan told the media at the NFL combine this week, "Everything's on the table" with Tagovailoa. That could mean the team keeps him, obviously, or trades him or releases him. Clearly, Tagovailoa isn't headed to Seattle, so how does this affect the Seahawks?

According to Bleacher Report's Alex Ballentine, the Dolphins' moving away from Tagovailoa could mean that Miami gives Seattle general manager John Schneider a call to inquire about Jalen Milroe. The idea makes sense, especially if Seattle can get back what Ballentine suggests.

Trade proposal sends Seattle Seahawks' Jalen Milroe to the Miami Dolphins

The truth is that while Milroe was taken in the third round of the 2025 NFL draft for the selection that Seattle got back in the trade that sent Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders, Milroe has no path to ever playing for the Seahawks. Sam Darnold has two years left on his current deal and is only 28 years old.

Assuming Darnold continues to be good, he would be signed to an extension for many years after his current contract ends in 2027. Milroe's rookie deal ends after the 2028 season. Moving him now, especially as Drew Lock is still under contract through 2026, gives the young quarterback a chance to play on a different team and gives Seattle more draft capital this year.

Ballentine suggests that Seattle could send Milroe to the Dolphins, and Miami would give Seattle a third-round choice. The Seahawks only have four draft picks in 2026, one in each of the first three rounds and one in the sixth round. As John Schneider likes to build through the draft, adding more picks would be wise.

The Seattle Seahawks also wouldn't be giving up on Jalen Milroe. He has the physical tools to be a good NFL quarterback, but he was chosen partly in case Darnold didn't work out, and Darnold most certainly has. Milroe appears to be a good person and one that the Miami Dolphins could use to help reset their culture.

The ironic part for Miami is that they could be replacing one former Alabama quarterback with another. Quinn Ewers and Zach Wilson might have some complaints, though.
