The Seattle Seahawks begin their defense of last season's Super Bowl title by playing the same team they defeated in that game: The New England Patriots. Seattle will host the game at Lumen Field, and that could mean tricky weather. Since it is still September, though, rain chances are less than they might be later in the season.
Somewhat oddly, head coach Mike Macdonald's team might need a dry field in Week 1. New England is the healthier group, and with offseason acquisition AJ Brown ready to make an immediate impact. Meanwhile, the Seahawks are missing several defensive backs.
This means the communication on the back end of the defense has to be tight, and a dry field should mean fewer potential miscues for players who have spent more time on the practice squad than the 53-man roster since final cuts were made. Players like D'Anthony Bell and Rodney Thomas will have to go from the bench to being consistently productive.
Seattle Seahawks should face no weather issues against the New England Patriots in Week 1
According to the Weather Channel, rainy conditions won't be a problem on Wednesday. In fact, the entire day should be a beautiful one in the Pacific Northwest. By kickoff at 5:15 pm PT, temperatures should be in the mid-70s with a light wind of less than 10 mph, and the chance of precipitation is less than five percent.
If the Seahawks weren't so banged up in the secondary, the weather might not matter. Players would know their roles well, and a breakdown in communication would be less likely. The threat in Week 1 is that backups playing the roles of starters will have to think a bit more about where they need to be, and that means their footing needs to be truer.
This works the same way offensively for the Seattle Seahawks. The expectation is that rookie running back Jadarian Price will be the featured back. He played at Notre Dame, so weather conditions could have been a struggle, but in his first NFL game, he doesn't need to worry about whether he is going to slip on a cut.
Seattle might also be able to win on special teams, and having returner Rashid Shaheed do his business without worrisome weather conditions is a bonus. In other words, the game might be a bit tighter than the Super Bowl when Seattle defeated New England 29-13, but the weather won't keep the Seahawks from winning the game.
