Seahawks John Schneider named NFL’s best GM

It’s about time. Finally, someone has handed the Seahawks John Schneider the title of NFL’s Best General Manager.

David Steele of the Sporting News put Schneider at the top of this year’s rankings, over such rival GM’s as Baltimore’s Ozzie Newsome, Denver’s John Elway, and Schneider’s old mentor Ted Thompson of the Packers.

Steele says the best way to make it to the top of his rankings is to “build a consistent winner,” and Schneider has certainly done that.  Working in harmony with Head Coach and V.P. Pete Carroll, Schneider took over a terrible roster in 2010 and transformed it into one that was good enough to make consecutive Super Bowls and looks poised to challenge for a few more.

Here’s what Steele said about Schneider:

"Back-to-back Super Bowls, with one win, are too much to ignore. Schneider has done in a short time to put the Seahawks among the elite, and he’s doing a lot to keep them there: he found a way to keep Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner in place and has achieved the balance of maintaining the core and knowing who to replace, and when."

It’s recognition that is long overdue for Schneider, who somehow continues to get overlooked by the NFL itself whenever they name their annual postseason NFL Executive Of The Year Award. Here’s the list of GM’s who have taken home that honor since Schneider took over the Seahawks:

  • 2010: Scott Pioli, Chiefs
  • 2011: Trent Baalke, 49ers
  • 2012: Ryan Grigson, Colts
  • 2013: John Dorsey, Chiefs
  • 2014: Jerry Jones, Cowboys

Nevermind that Jones’ son Stephen is largely credited with directing all the major personnel moves for Dallas last year, or that Pioli has since been fired (allowing the Chiefs to have TWO winners over this span.) But there’s one thing none of those GM’s have done that Schneider has since moving to Seattle…..

Win a single Super Bowl.

Kudos to David Steele for finally acknowledging what we’ve all known for years. It’s much deserved recognition for John Schneider.
