John Schneider confirmed on 710 ESPN Seattle’s Brock and Salk show today that Seattle is open to trading cornerback Richard Sherman. Whether this trade becomes a reality is another issue altogether, of course. Still, Schneider hinted that both the Seahawks and Sherman could be open to the trade idea.

Schneider reiterated that “98 percent of the deals that we’re involved with, we don’t follow through with.” The Seahawks are certainly not afraid of making deals that they think will better the team, like bringing in Jimmy Graham for Max Unger two seasons ago. But what trade involving Sherman would make Seattle better?

Does Sherman want to go?

The one hole on Seattle’s defense is the corner opposite Sherman. Trading Sherman would only enflame the question of how good the secondary can be. The Seahawks should still have a championship windows for a few years. If Sherman were to leave, that window might close sooner.

Sherman told 710 ESPN’s Gee Scott last week that he “understands (the NFL) is a business.” Schneider responded to the question of Sherman being involved in trade talks with this

"“Absolutely. This isn’t a secret like this just came out of nowhere. People find things out and we’re not going to lie to each other and we’re not going to BS each other. It’s going to be all laid out, and like I said, that doesn’t happen everywhere. We have open lines of communication between our coaching staff and our player personnel staff. It goes through player development, it goes through our sports science group. There’s a lot going on there.”"

Seattle will make decisions based on what they think will work for the football team. If Sherman is traded and the deal does not work out, Seahawks fans might ask themselves, “Do we still believe in Seattle’s management?” Trading Sherman is extremely risky. If he goes, let’s hope the Seahawks only get better.
