Seahawks Set Practice Squad For 2013
In the wake of the 53 man roster being named the practice squad announcement is often lost in the wash. However, practice squad players often make an impact when injuries strike or can be useful long term projects. Today the Seahawks announced the following eight players will be their practice squad in 2013, at least initially:
DT Micheal Brooks- Undersized DT out of East Carolina, seems unlikely to see action with the Seahawks this year given that they just traded for D’Anthony Smith and Jordan Hill will be getting healthy.
TE Cooper Helfet- Smaller, pass catching tight end. Covered him in my “Obscure Seahawks” series if you are interested in reading more.
LB Ty Powell- A 7th round pick in 2013, Powell is older than the average prospect (25) so he’ll need to show something in the near future if he wants to stick around long term.
G Ryan Seymour- Another 7th rounder this year Seymour is backup G material long term in a perfect world.
DB DeShawn Shead- Shead impressed quite a few people this off-season and was a real threat to make this team. His size and speed combo grants him the versatility to play corner or safety which is pretty rare.
DT Sealver Siliga-Siliga was the return in the John Moffit trade. If the Seahawks thought he was anything more than a depth piece they probably wouldn’t have traded for D’Anthony Smith.
G Jared Smith- I had always though that Smith wasn’t much more than a camp body but apparently he caught Tom Cable’s eye.
WR Bryan Walters- Walters didn’t really get a chance to show what he could do until late in the preseason but apparently the coaching staff liked what they saw. Has some special teams value as a possible punt returner.
There’s the quick rundown on this year’s practice squad, although it should be noted that practice squads experience a great deal of turnover and not all of these guys will be property of the Seattle Seahawks by the end of the year.
