4. Jeremy Maclin, Kansas City Chiefs
Contract: 5 years, $55 million
Maclin had a great year in 2014 after coming back from an ACL injury. He could be even better in 2015 as his knee continues to get stronger. What’s not to like?
Mainly, he’s stuck playing with Alex Smith at quarterback, who completed exactly zero touchdowns to wide receivers last season. While it is easy to blame that on the receivers, the Chiefs had talent at the position, including Dwayne Bowe.
The problem has much more to do with Smith than the receivers, and adding Maclin doesn’t suddenly make Smith a better quarterback. The Chiefs now have a guy with a massive contract that they cannot fully use.
3. Torey Smith, San Francisco 49ers
Contract: 5 years $40 million
The 49ers are a team that has hemorrhaged talent over the last few days. They tried to counteract that by signing Torey Smith to a massive contract. Desperation is never a good justification for spending that kind of money.
To fit Smith under the cap, the 49ers had to release Stevie Johnson. That means they paid a ton of money to a guy just to replace someone who was of similar quality.
Ultimately, that was a ton of money, and it doesn’t make the 49ers a noticeably better team.
