1. Byron Maxwell, Philadelphia Eagles
Contract: 6 years, $63 million
If feels weird to put the ex-Seahawk in this spot, but he clearly belongs there. Maxwell is a good player with a lot of qualities teams want in a cornerback. He just isn’t $63 million and $25 million guaranteed good.
If you’re paying that much for a cornerback, you better be getting a Richard Sherman. Maxwell isn’t nearly at the same level of Sherman.
Maxwell benefitted immensely by playing in Seattle’s great defense. He was also the weakest of Seattle’s four great defensive backs. Now, Maxwell is going to have to go out there and be the top guy, and he won’t be getting the help he got in Seattle.
It is difficult to see this ending well for the Eagles. At some point they are going to realize that they can get 80% of the production at 15% of the cost, but won’t be able to move Maxwell because of the guaranteed money involved in his current deal.
Maxwell is 27, if this plays out as predicted, he’ll be a free agent again at 30. That means he’ll have one more chance to get paid in free agency.
