8. Cary Williams, Seattle Seahawks
Contract: 3 years, $18 million
The Seahawks have taken some heat for this deal, but they shouldn’t. The deal’s structure is extremely team friendly. Much of the cap money in this deal is pushed into the third year. Either Williams turns himself into one of the top corners in the league, or he’ll be cut before he plays that season.
The Seahawks were able to get a cornerback that fits their system perfectly, and one that Kris Richard is excited to get a chance to work with. They also did so on a team-friendly deal. There is very little not to like here.
7. James Carpenter, New York Jets
Contract: 4 years, $19.1 million
Yes, that James Carpenter. He is coming off his best season and it is no coincidence that it was the first time in which he had a full offseason to train. He’s healthy again this year, and should continue to progress for the Jets next year.
The contract is also structured in a way that removes much of the risk for the Jets. If Carpenter’s weight balloons up like it did in 2013, then New York can release him after only one year with no additional money owed. If he plays to his ability, the the Jets get an above average guard at below market value.
