Seattle Seahawks Deep Roster Sleepers
By Dan Viens
It’s no secret that the Seahawks are looking for pass-catchers who can make an impact. Chris Matthews is garnering a lot of attention after his breakout performance in Super Bowl XLIX, but there here are a couple other intriguing WR prospects buried on the current depth chart:
Kevin Smith – 6’0″, 218, 23 years old: Many of you will remember Smith from his playing days at the University of Washington. Smith finished the season on the Hawks practice squad. He caught 50 balls for 765 yards and 4 TD’s his senior season at UW. He can return kicks and punts as well, potentially filling a huge void on Seattle’s roster at the moment. If he can shine on special teams and catch what’s thrown to him in camp, he may have an outside shot at being this year’s Bryan Walters.

Douglas McNeil – 6’3″, 200, 6’4″, 208, 26: The Seahawks official site lists him at 6’3″ but McNeil himself says he’s an inch taller and 8 lbs heavier in his workout video. McNeil is as deep a sleeper as a deep-sleeper can get, unless you’re an avid watcher of the Arena League. As a rookie with the Portland Thunder in 2014 he caught 66 passes for 858 yards and 11 TD’s, and his highlight video is even more impressive than the one that had us all slobbering over Chris Matthews last year. Big, fast (4.47 best in 40), and with some time spent on the practice squad last year, he could push Matthews for that young, cheap red zone target the Hawks would love to hand a roster spot to.
