Is Taking Jameis Winston First Overall Too Risky?
With the NFL Draft quickly approaching, I’ve decided to spend some time on who is believed to be the first quarterback taken. There’s a chance a mistake will be made.

Over the years there have been draft picks that were questionable at best. Too often coaches, general managers and some owners decide a player’s talent is enough to use a high draft pick on them. Off the field some of these kids are lacking maturity and sense. Whether a team believes they have the personnel to keep them in check or somehow becoming a NFL player will change them, team after team, year after year, risks are taken.
This year’s draft has the very talented quarterback out of Florida State, Jameis Winston. Along with his abilities and potential there are questions about his character. Allegations of rape that just won’t go away. Questionable conduct on campus. Is it a good move to make him your future quarterback?
To be fair, I haven’t met Winston or spent even one second with him. Maybe the allegations of rape is a ploy to get money out of a guy who’s about to be quite wealthy. Maybe his maturity issues are just a kid having fun in college. I certainly wouldn’t want some of my college experience exposed. Maybe I’m not being fair.
Either way Tampa Bay is on the clock and they will need to make that decision. He’s either going to be a great investment or the next Lawrence Phillips. The alternative, if the Bucs believe the risk is too high, is Marcus Mariota. Not a bad option, really.
If Jameis Winston is innocent of rape, I’ll be rooting for him to turn a page, become a great leader, teammate and man. If it turns out he hurt this woman I’ll be rooting for justice.
One thing I’d love to see happen, is the game itself being the only news we hear about.
I won’t hold my breath.
Go Hawks!
