It is hard to believe that Matthews didn’t have a single catch last season before the Super Bowl. It is true, though he did recover the onsides kick in the NFCCG. That should count for something.
Then the Super Bowl happened. The Seahawks may have lost, but it had nothing to do with Mathews. He played out of his mind, and would have been the hero for Seattle had it not been for the Russell Wilson interception at the goal line.
Matthews is still very much an unknown quantity. He missed most of the preseason with a shoulder injury, though he did play well against Denver before getting hurt.
What most fans didn’t see was Matthews looking very comfortable with the starters in training camp. He and Wilson regularly hooked up for big gains during practice.
Matthews is going to play a big role in the offense this season. Much like he was in the Super Bowl, he should regularly be Wilson’s 2nd or 3rd option. Matthews will get his chances.
