San Francisco Update

A week after surprising everyone with competent play against a talented team, the 49ers got absolutely steamrolled by the Pittsburgh Steelers. This was a game that might not even have been as close as the 43-18 score.

San Francisco’s secondary got scorched over and over. The pass rush failed to get pressure. The new hurry up offense sputtered and only made things worse.

This is more of what we had expected from the 49ers this year. They lack talent in significant places, so when thing go wrong for them, it can get ugly very fast. That is exactly what happened this week.

St. Louis Update

The Rams were also and embarrassing defeat. The difference was that they lost to an absolutely awful Washington team. An emotional letdown after the upset of Seattle was expected, but losing by two touchdowns to a team with an awful roster talent is a bad sign.

Nick Foles threw for just 150 yards on 32 passes. Meanwhile, Kirk Cousins looked competent for Washington and the Rams couldn’t stop the run.

Jeff Fisher and Nick Foles are proving to be exactly what everyone thought they’d be. They might looks good for 2-3 games per year, but they’re mostly just a mediocre pair.

Arizona Cardinals Update

The Cardinals are now in full control of the NFC West. They took care of business with a 48-23 win against a bad Bears team.

Larry Fitzgerald put to rest the rumors that he was tool old to still be a major factor in the NFL. He had three touchdowns and 112 receiving yards to lead the Cardinals to the blowout win.

Rookie running back David Johnson stole the show though with an electric 108 yard kick return for a touchdown. He is expected to see an increased role each week.

Arizona’s soft early schedule has allowed them to get off to a great start. That should continue over the next couple of weeks, but they’ll likely fall back to Earth later in the season when things get much more difficult.
