1: T Walter Jones (1997 – 2008)

Offensive Tackle it never the flashiest or sexiest position, and it’s the hardest to quantify with statistics, but Jones is universally regarded as the best Left Tackle of his generation, and one of the best to ever play the game.

Drafted 6th overall in 1997, he was the one great gift former coach Dennis Erickson left the Seahawk organization. He was entrenched as the starter from the day he hit the field and started all 180 games he played in. He was remarkably durable until a knee injury ended his career in 2008. Listing all the accolades he received would crash my hard drive, but here’s a sampling:

  • John Madden, in 2004, called him the best player in the NFL
  • Mike Holmgren says he’s the best offensive player he’s ever coached (a list that includes Montana, Young and Rice)
  • Named to the NFL’s 2000’s All Decade Team
  • 9 time Pro Bowler
  • 4 time 1st team All Pro
  • Number 71 retired in 2010
  • Ring Of Honor Member
  • NFL Hall Of Fame inductee in 2014, making it in his first year of eligibility

So there you have it. My list of the Top 40 Seahawk Players of All Time. What do you think? Where did I get it right and where do you think I blew it? Please leave a comment or hit me up on Twitter @SeahawksForever

In the coming days I’ll reveal who some of my Honorable Mention picks were, guys who just barely missed the cut. Then I’ll take my list and compare it to the fan vote and see where we differed.
