NFL Power Index: Seattle up to No. 2

facebooktwitterreddit

The NFL Power Index rankings for Week 13. The Seahawks move up to No. 2, while Kansas City sits at No. 1 once again.

The NFL Power Index has loved the Seahawks all season, despite those five losses. Three straight dominant performances has them all the way up at No. 2 now. This is the highest the Seahawks have been this year.

This has been a season of firsts for the NFL Power Index. It was the first time that we had a team under 10 (Detroit was around 5 for three weeks). This is also the first time that there are two teams over 90 at the same time.

In fact we almost had a third team top the 90 power mark. Arizona improved in almost every statistically category except for special teams this week, and almost eclipsed that threshold themselves.

Carolina’s tight win against a bad New Orleans team led to them dropping a spot to No. 7. They may still be undefeated, but the NFL Power Index does not count them among the elite teams this season.

It should be noted that there is a big gap between No. 5 and No. 6, and another between No. 8 and No. 9. There clearly are only a few good teams this season, and there is a lot of mediocrity.

Over 30 stats are combined into several indexes, and then those indexes are weighted and combined into a raw power index. That is then normalized to historical data from the last 15 years. 50 is average.

Included are some of the indices that go into the final calculation. You’ll notice that wins and losses are not included. This was intentional.

The coefficients for each index was weighted based on its correlation to wins. This allows the final output to be predictive for future results.
