Seahawks: 18 Free Agents set to hit open market in March

facebooktwitterreddit

There are 18 members are the 2015 Seattle Seahawks that are set to be unrestricted free agents when the league year begins in March.

The Seattle Seahawks have 18 pending unrestricted free agents. This includes 16 that were on the active roster in the playoffs. (The other 2 were on injured reserve.) That is almost one-third of the active roster.

Combine these players with the 6 RFAs and 7 ERFA, and 30 of the Seahawks from last season are currently not under contract for next season. That is quite a few that must either be re-signed or replaced.

Ideally, the Seahawks will be able to get most of these players back for next season. There’s a couple of reasons for that. First, it was an extremely good team, and they’d like it to stay that way.

Second, a large turnover means a lot of players that’ll be in their first year in the team’s system. It takes time to learn Seattle’s schemes, so keeping players in the system pays off with long-term benefits.

There are some obvious concerns here for the Seahawks. For starters, both starting defensive tackles are set to be free agents. Replacing both will be extremely difficult, so at least one will need to be re-signed.

Another issue will be at CB. Shead is ERFA, so he’ll be back. Their No. 4 player at the position (Marcus Burley) is a RFA as well. Jeremy Lane is UFA, and will be tough to re-sign.

A similar situation shows up at center. Starter Patrick Lewis is an RFA. His backup, Lemuel JeanPierre, is a UFA. One, or both, must be re-signed this offseason.

The rest of the offensive line is also a concern. The team was forced to replace two starters on the line this past offseason. Now they’re staring at the real possibility of having to do the same thing once again this year.
