With the NFL scouting combine underway in Indianapolis, we take a look at some possible Seattle Seahawks draft targets.

The NFL Draft is fast approaching and teams all around the NFL are working furiously to put together their draft boards. For the Seattle Seahawks, this is a crucial year for GM John Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll. The last couple of drafts have produced more depth than superstars, but with their high-priced young core now causing annual salary cap constraints, they find themselves needing to hit on a couple starter-quality players this time around.

Let’s take a look at a player who may appear to be a fit in Seattle, regardless of round.

SHON COLEMAN, OT, Auburn

Coleman is simply one of the most intriguing stories in this year’s draft. A heralded recruit out of high school, Coleman was diagnosed with Leukemia his freshman year and missed two seasons of football while undergoing chemotherapy. Miraculously he made a full recovery, regained his weight and athleticism, and established himself as one of the best tackles in the country.

More from Seattle Seahawks Draft

SPECS:

  • Height – 6’5″
  • Weight – 307
  • Arms – 35 1.8″
  • 40 yard dash time – N/A

STRENGTHS:

Long, strong and nasty. Solid pass protector and a beast in the running game. Gets to the second level well. Played some right tackle before settling in on the left side.

WEAKNESSES:

Obviously the medical testing will be a key to Coleman’s draft stock. Not only will teams want to see that the Leukemia is completely gone, but he also underwent knee surgery recently and won’t be able to work out for teams until shortly before the draft, hence the lack of testing numbers at the combine this week. Will be an over aged rookie, turning 25 during the season.

HOW HE WOULD FIT FOR THE SEAHAWKS:

It’s no secret that the Seahawks are looking to improve, check that…. rebuild their offensive line this offseason. Coleman would fit in nicely at either right or left tackle, depending on what happens with impending free agent Russell Okung. Typically Seattle prefers younger prospects, but they also target young men who have had to overcome adversity in their lives. Who’s persevered more than Coleman?

Physically and athletically I believe Coleman meets all the Hawks criteria, but given the age and medical history I think they’d be hesitant to take him at #26 and he may not last until the late second round. If they see him as someone who could come in and start right away, however, he may in play for that first pick.
