Michael Bennett’s agent met with Seahawks about new deal
By Keith Myers
Michael Bennett’s new agent just met with the Seahawks about a new deal, but don’t expect a new contract to happen anytime soon.
Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett still wants a new contract. He recently fired his agent, and now his new agency is trying to accomplish what was deemed impossible not long ago.
Just because the sides are talking doesn’t mean that any deal will get done, or is even in the works. Bennett recently changed agents, and his new representatives may have simply wanted to get the lay of the land.

. Seattle’s hands are somewhat tied, making a reworked deal quite difficult to see happening.
On the other hand, rewarding Bennett for going about this the correct way, as opposed to holding out like Kam Chancellor, would send a very clear message as well. This would be especially true if the team later decides to trade Chancellor.
If something does get done, it is unlikely to include new money for this coming season. There might be more guarantees included, or another year added on, but new money would set a very bad precedent, and one they worked hard not to set with Chancellor last season.
One possibility would be to convert most of Bennett’s salary for 2016 into a signing bonus. This type of restructure is typically done for salary cap purposes.

The Seahawks could then make subtle changes to Bennett’s contract, while selling it as salary cap move to other player who might want to rework their own contracts.
Either way, this situation is one that likely won’t go away, and an unhappy Bennett is bad news for the Seahawks.
