PENN WANTS TO BE A SEAHAWK?
The storylines are beginning to heat up regarding the Seahawks situation at left tackle. Incumbent starter and free agent LT Russell Okung has reiterated his desire to test the market, despite Seattle brass letting him know they would like to retain him. Okung has had to wait a little longer than other free agents to find out what his true market value is, however, as players are not allowed to contact teams directly until 1:00pm PST tomorrow. Okung is representing himself this time around, so he’s had to wait while other players have their agents working on contract details as we speak.

Complicating matters even further in Okung’s case is the question of how quickly, and how completely, he can recover from shoulder surgery he had after the season. He’s already been an injury magnet. Seattle’s confidence in his ability to get and stay healthy will surely impact what they’re willing to offer him as compensation.
Meanwhile, a possible replacement has emerged should Okung leave. Raiders free agent left tackle Donald Penn, appearing on NFL Network this morning, threw his OWN hat in the ring when asked about teams he might possibly sign with.
“Seattle’s been on the up and up, and you never know what they’re going to do with Okung, so that’s another possibility,” Penn said.
For Penn to make such a public proclamation, it’s reasonable to assuming that his agent has had a least preliminary discussions with the team about their plans.
Penn is 32 years old and has been the Anti-Okung in terms of dependability, not missing a game in the last 8 seasons. He could certainly be a good stop gap solution if the Seahawks were to draft a young, high-ceiling left tackle prospect, such as Texas A&M’s Germain Ifedi, who need some time to develop.

Once we get past 1:00pm tomorrow things should start to become clearer. Once Okung is able to talk to teams, reports, leaks and rumors should start to flow about what type of interest he’ll have from the outside. At least the Seahawks know there’s one player willing to listen if they choose to pursue a veteran replacement option.
