Round 2, Pick 25: Vernon Butler, NT, Louisiana Tech

When Louisiana Tech’s Vernon Butler was still on the board when Seattle picked in round 2, any thought of trading down again was thrown completely out the window. This was a perfect combination of need and value for the Seahawks.

Butler is a massive, run stuffing nose tackle. He’s an instant starter for Seattle in the void created by the departure of Brandon Mebane.

Butler’s weakness is as a pass rusher, where he is adequate but not special. That is what will cause him to drop this far. It shouldn’t be a problem for the Seahawks though, since they like to employ a deep rotation on the defensive line with extensive sub-packages.

Round 2, Pick 32: Javon Hargrave, DT, South Carolina State

The Seahawks then used their second pick in round 2, the one acquired from Denver, to double dip at defensive tackle. Javon Hargrave out of South Carolina State is the opposite of Butler from a talent standpoint. He’s a bit undersized, but he wins with explosive speed and the ability to knife through his assigned gap.

Hargrave is a guy who will start as a rotational pass rusher, but he has the talent to develop into a starting 3-technique defensive tackle.
