Seahawks helped by Eagles and Rams trades
By Keith Myers
The Seattle Seahawks will benefit from the Rams and Eagles moving up in the draft to secure themselves each a quarterback.
The recently flurry trades at the top of the NFL have taken most of the drama out of the first few picks. The Seattle Seahawks weren’t involved in those trade and won’t pick until near the end of the first round, but they may end up as one of the biggest winners from these trades.
St. Louis moved up to No 1 to get themselves a quarterback. It is almost certainly going to be California’s Jared Goff, though they won’t confirm that. Philadelphia followed that up with a trade to No. 2 in the draft order. They also will take a quarterback, and it will almost certainly be North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz.
On the surface, it wouldn’t appear to change Seattle’s draft. The Seahawks don’t pick until No. 26. It isn’t like Laremy Tunsil dropping to the third pick will make a difference at the bottom of the first round. At this point, we’re just changing the order of player taken before Seattle is on the clock; they aren’t changing who will be available.
The reasons why Seattle is helped is because it makes their pick more valuable if (when) they trade down.
San Francisco and Dallas are both interested in acquiring a QB. Paxton Lynch, the consensus third-best QB in the draft class, isn’t a guy that’ll go it in the top 10 when the 49ers and Cowboys will be making their first selection, and they’d love to get him with their second pick.
Denver and Cleveland are also both in the QB market. Denver has pick 31, and Cleveland has pick 32. Dallas and San Francisco have picks 34 and 37. Whomever wants Lynch needs to be at the front of that line.
And that is what makes Seattle’s pick the perfect spot for a trade. Jumping up higher that No. 26 becomes cost-prohibitive. Wait until later, like with Green Bay at 27, and the teams risk that one of the other teams will trade up ahead of them with Seattle.

All the uncertainty around where the top 2 QBs will go is gone. If you want the other top QB, you better be willing to trade up for him, or someone else will. When that happens, John Schneider will gladly take those extra draft picks off your hands.
