Seahawks draft target: Corey Clement, RB, Wisconsin
By Keith Myers
Wisconsin’s Corey Clement looks like the type of running back that the Seahawks draft. He has his flaws, but might be worth late round pick.
Corey Clement checks many of the boxes the Seattle Seahawks look for in a running back. He is a guy who clearly loves the weight room; he already looks like an guy who has been in the NFL for a year or two.
On the field there is a lot to like as well. He’s a big power runner who loves contact and always seems to fall forward. While Clement isn’t going to break and ankles with his moves, he’s got enough wiggle to avoid defenders and occasionally make a guy miss. More than likely not he’s going to simply run over a defender rather than run around them, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Looking at his tape, there is one thing that jumps out that is a major concern. He has a tendency to dance too much right at the line of scrimmage. Sometimes it is a jump cut, others times it is an unnecessary stutter step. That causes him to lose momentum and not always get every yard that is blocked for him.
This stems from the fact that he simply isn’t patient enough to let his blocks develop. He often gets to the hole too quickly, and is then adjusting to players not being where he expected them to be.
In the passing game, Clement is a capable and willing pass blocker. Unfortunately, his hands as a receiver are far from ideal. He’s a guy that can be on the field on passing downs, but any NFL team would be better served by replacing him on third downs and in two-minute situations.
Next: Earl Mitchell interest makes no sense for Seattle
If the Seahawks are looking for a late-round value, they could do worse than taking a flyer on Clement. Physically there is a lot to like, and if they can get him to develop some patience as a runner, he should end up as a productive back in Seattle’s scheme.
