C.J. Prosise can take over in 2018

Yes, Prosise has had injury problems. He hopes to put those behind him, and shows every sign of having an excellent season. Kenneth Arthur of SB Nation’s Field Gulls wrote that Prosise could be the breakout player of the league in 2017, in fact. Believe me, I hope you’re right, Kenneth.

The reason I think Prosise will have to wait for 2018 is the competition in the Seahawks backfield. Most writers, including Arthur, expect Prosise to be a third-down specialist. It’s going to be very difficult to be a star with eight touches a game. Effective, yes. A major factor in team wins, yes. A breakout player? I just don’t see it, not with so few touches.

Given the chance to carry the load, we’ve seen what C. J. Prosise can do. In case you forgot:

Trust me, the Patriots haven’t forgotten. Let’s not forget that Prosise had 24 touches in that game, not eight.

So why would 2018 be any different from 2017? No Eddie Lacy. Hey, I hope Lacy has a terrific season, and makes every nickel of his $3 million contract incentives. If he does, he’s going to command a much bigger contract, and with huge impending contracts for Jimmy Graham and Kam Chancellor, I just don’t see Seattle keeping Lacy for big bucks. On the flip side, if Lacy has a good season, not great, that just gives Thomas Rawls and Prosise that much more opportunity in 2018. Well, in 2017 too, but I don’t expect Lacy to totally flop. So Prosise will have a much bigger load to carry in 2018, and a much bigger opportunity to break out as a star.
