Beyond the Game: Seahawks preseason game 4 weekend
Thursday, Seahawks fans got a reprieve from the relentless sunshine.
However brief the reprieve, I’m grateful for it. I hate to be such a rain nerd, but I’m definitely one of “those people” who can’t wait to get under a nice protective cloud cover. I sun burn easily, you see. I generally won’t leave my home when the sun is shining without a long sleeve shirt on. So the only time I get fresh air on my arms is when it’s cloudy. Meaning, in this tiny sub-season (or preseason, for the Seahawks) when the clouds come back but the temperatures are warm enough to support a tee shirt. I love this time of year.
At the time of this writing I am ignorant as to the outcome of the Seahawks final pre-season game. So take joy in the fact that you are living in the (relative) future. And since (for you) the pre-season is over, here are some suggestions for ways to pass the time.
What to do and where to go before the real Seahawks games begin
The biggest thing going on this weekend is Bumbershoot. I remember going to Bumbershoot when I was a kid. It was free. My dad would find a spot and busk with his acoustic guitar playing James Taylor cover songs. My brother would go breakdance on the first patch of cardboard he could find. There was usually a crowd around the cardboard watching the breakdancers. My brother was no slouch at breakdancing, and would usually jump right in. Bumbershoot is a lot different these days, but you can certainly count on tons of music, comedy, film, art and inspiration. If you could make ten copies of yourself, you still couldn’t experience everything in a typical Bumbershoot day. I don’t have time to give the list of artists at Bumbershoot, even if I made ten copies of myself.
The Puyallup Fair also kicks off Friday. I understand it’s now being called “The Washington State Fair”, but calling it that feels a little like calling South Center Mall “Westfield”. Are you with me, locals? Are you?? Anyway, lots of good art and music to see there as well. But they also have animals and rides, and probably even some animal rides.

The Mariners are hosting the Athletics Friday through Sunday. It’s Childhood Cancer Awareness, so a portion of each ticket will go towards fighting cancer in children.
And now go make your paper chain counting down the days till Sept. 10th for the season opener against the Packers.
