The Seahawks added a huge piece to their offensive line on Monday in Duane Brown. Clearly Seattle and Houston were not only playing football on Sunday. The teams were also working out a deal.

The Seahawks made a big move on Monday. Adding left tackle Duane Brown changes the production of the offensive line. Brown is one of the best left tackles in the NFL. And Seattle has struggled for several years on the unit.

In return, Seattle sent cornerback Jeremy Lane, a fifth-round pick in 2018 and a second-round pick in 2018 to the Texans. In my opinion, this is a great move for Seattle. Lane was not going to be re-signed after this season anyway. A fifth-round pick is something Seattle could get back easily. And John Schneider will probably find a way to get the second-round pick back, too.

Brown is signed through 2018, so he won’t be leaving this offseason. Next year he could make $9.75 million. In today’s NFL, this is a bargain for a good left tackle. And while Brown is 32 years old, offensive linemen have the ability to play well for several years after that age.

Even if Brown does not play as well as he did in 2014 or 2015, he is still a huge upgrade for Seattle. The Seahawks pass protected fairly well on Sunday versus the Texans, but run blocking was terrible again. Brown should help greatly with that. Maybe not this Sunday versus the Washington Redskins, but in the weeks that follow.

Most likely, the Seahawks line will be Brown at left tackle, Ethan Pocic at left guard, Justin Britt at center, Oday Aboushi at right guard and Germain Ifedi at right tackle. Britt and Brown are good. Pocic will be better in 2018. While still not fantastic, Seattle’s line looks instantly better this year and next.
