Tight end Will Dissly goes to the Seahawks in round four. He’s a classic day three pick, as he fits a need, but did he go too soon?

I like the player. Let me say that again. I really like the player. Will Dissly is seen by many as the best blocking tight end in the draft. There are a lot of positives to his game, as you can see from the prospect write-up on nfl.com. Some of those positives: adjust routes to to improve space; excellent hand-eye coordination and focus; quick fit into run blocks.

There are also a lot of negatives. Frankly, I’m too sad to go into those, so let’s just say he there are a few reasons he was available on day three and leave it at that. There are *always* negatives with any player, so I’m not that concerned about them.

Yes, Will Dissly is a good fit. The Seahawks needed a tight end, and they need to improve their blocking. Dissly fills both needs. But there are a coupe of problems with the pick. Mainly, the timing of it.

Right player, wrong slot

Most sites didn’t have him going this early. Pro Football Focus didn’t have him ranked among the top 12 tight ends. CBS Sports projected him as a seventh round pick, if that. I haven’t found one projection that had him going as high as the fifth round. With four picks coming up for the Seahawks, I just don’t get drafting Dissly here. Seattle already picked up a fine blocking tight end in Ed Dickson. True, it wasn’t an earth-shattering pick up, but he can block and he can catch.

Again, I really like the player. I think he has an excellent chance to be a real contributor this year, yet alone in the future. The fact he’s a Husky is icing on the 6’4″ 270 pound cake. All I know is, if someone grabs Shaquem Griffin before the Seahawks, I am going to be physically ill.
