Seahawks would make some noise with this move

Cornerback Patrick Peterson of the Cardinals is worth a long, long stare. Yes, he’s in the division. Trades within divisions aren’t exactly unicorns, although they’re close. For a rival to send any player your way, you have to pay a higher price than that random team in the other conference. For a player as good as Peterson, the price would be pretty high indeed.

How good is Peterson? I’m pretty sure every 12 knows the answer to this, but just in case, I’ll fill you in. He’s made the Pro Bowl every season of his career. He’s in his eighth year, and has never missed a start. Pro Football Focus currently ranks him the fourth best corner in the league. At his current pace he’ll establish career best numbers in tackles and assists. He’s easily the best corner who’s at least rumored to be available.

But is he available at all? Our fellow FanSided team Raising Zona reported that Peterson’s attempt to force a trade didn’t work out very well. Now is it possible that this is all a smokescreen to drive up the price? Of course it is.

A phone call to the Cardinals would sound like this: “Well, we told Patrick that he’s critical to the future of our franchise. But, just how many picks would you be willing to send our way?” Whether it’s Peterson or not, Seattle has an opportunity to tighten up what is already a fine secondary.

No, I don’t think Peterson will be traded. I certainly don’t think any team, not even the Cardinals, would be goofy enough to send a 28 year old shutdown corner to a division rival. And I know the Seahawks would never pay what it would take to get him.  But just remember, the Red Sox traded away Babe Ruth to the Yankees. When it comes to trades with division rivals, anything can happen.
