Richard Sherman recruiting current Seahawks safety Earl Thomas
By Lee Vowell
Richard Sherman likes to talk a lot, of course. On Wednesday at the NFL combine he talked about how he would like Seahawks safety Earl Thomas join him as a 49er.
We already can pretty much assume that Earl Thomas won’t be returning to the Seahawks and will leave in free agency. And to be honest, he probably shouldn’t return to Seattle. 12s saw how Thomas left the field after getting injured in week four of the 2018 season and it was classless. Richard Sherman probably liked it, though.
On Wednesday, Sherman voiced his thoughts on Thomas while Sherman talked with the media at the NFL combine. Sherman, a former Seahawks cornerback, was released last offseason after the team saw him as too expensive to keep. But now, Sherman wants his former Legion of Boom partner to help him in San Francisco.
Thomas seems to want to play for his home-state’s Dallas Cowboys. Thomas even ran over to the Cowboys locker room after Seattle defeated Dallas in 2017 and said, “Come get me!” And Dallas might now have a very good chance of signing Thomas.
According to Sherman, if all things are equal, Thomas would choose to play with the Cowboys. San Francisco, though, has a bunch of money they can spend and clearly Thomas wants to get paid a lot of money. I am not judging him harshly for that. We all want to get paid lots of money really.
My issue with Thomas, and I assume most 12s have the same issue, is how disrespectful he was towards the Seattle organization while holding out last offseason and then the way he left the field in week four. Thomas has talked about playing with a brotherhood of players but Thomas was not a good teammate in the end.
When asked on Wednesday when meeting with the media at the NFL combine if the Seahawks had spoken to Thomas about a new contract, Seattle general manager John Schneider said simply, “No.” It is clear that Thomas isn’t ever going to play with Seattle again. But he might play against them as a member of the 49ers should Sherman get his wish.
