Pick 124: Seattle Seahawks select Drew Sample, TE Washington

The Seahawks have options at tight end, so Drew Sample is a bit of a luxury pick. But Nick Vannett is one year from free agency, Ed Dickson is aging and could save the Seahawks money with a June 1 cut, and Will Dissly is coming off a major leg injury and may not be ready for 2019.

Sample is a solid, all-around tight end. He is solid in the run game and is getting better in the passing game. He doesn’t have the most natural of hands but gets the job done. He doesn’t have much of a route tree in his arsenal. But he understands coverages and has a knack for finding soft spots in zone coverage.

As a run blocker, he is more of a technician than a bully. He shows sound fundamentals with his hands and sealing the edge. He maintains leverage throughout blocks and has the athleticism to get to the second level to finish off run plays.

A slightly above-average athlete, Sample will still need to develop at the NFL level but could be an excellent role player at the next level. The Seahawks have experimented with the pass-catching tight ends. But if last year’s acquisitions of Ed Dickson and Will Dissly taught us anything, it’s that Seattle will sacrifice receiving ability for a sound run and pass blocking tight end.
