Ranking Seahawks’ Russell Wilson among NFC West quarterbacks
By Lee Vowell
2. Jared Goff – Los Angeles Rams
Goff was the first overall pick in the 2016 draft. But not by his current coach Sean McVay. This is both a good and bad thing. McVay may have gone with a different kind of quarterback. That is the bad for the Rams. But the good is that McVay is suck a great offensive coach that he has made Goff into a good quarterback.
To be honest, I have no idea what Goff thought he was when he came into the NFL. Had he stayed under former coach Jeff Fisher he would not have developed into as good of a quarterback as he is. That said, Goff is still a product of McVay’s system.
Case in point, when McVay’s system has broken down in the playoffs the last couple of seasons, Goff has not looked good. In 2017, the Rams scored 13 points in a loss to the Falcons in their first playoff game. Goff completed just 53% of his passes and threw for just 259 yards on 45 passes.
In 2018, Los Angeles lost to the Patriots in the Super Bowl. The Rams scored just 3 points. Goff completed 19 of 38 passes for 229 yards and no touchdowns and an interception. One of the differences between Goff and Russell Wilson is that Wilson can create yards and completions when those are readily available to the normal NFL quarterback and Goff cannot do those things. Goff is good but he isn’t a great quarterback.
