Three players Seahawks can least afford to lose other than Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner

Jason Myers, kicker

Hear me out on this one. Jason Myers was signed as a free agent this offseason after being the Pro Bowl kicker for the New York Jets in 2018. Seattle actually had Myers in camp last year before releasing him in favor of Sebastian Janikowski. Releasing Myers now seems like a monumental mistake.

In 2017, Seattle kept Blair Walsh on the roster as their kicker. Walsh was mostly terrible in important situations and was one of the big reasons Seattle did not make the playoffs two years ago. Walsh most likely will never kick in the NFL again and shouldn’t ever have for the Seahawks.

Janikowski had some decent moments last year for Seattle but as the season proceeded, Janikowski grew less efficient and then was injured. Signing the 40-year old Janikowski was only going to be a quick fix anyway, even if Janikowski had performed well.

Myers has a strong, accurate leg. He should help Seattle win football games they shouldn’t. Seattle will still run the ball a lot and the defenses isn’t as good as it once was. This means a lot of close football games where a great kicker can be the difference between making the playoffs or not.

Myers also won’t be a one-year rental. He is signed through 2022. A lot of people may not like the size of Myers’ contract. But these same people won’t be complaining when Myers puts Seattle in position to win at least two games in 2019 they wouldn’t have with another kicker.
