With the retirement of Doug Baldwin and a young receiving group, the Seahawks might rely on Jaron Brown more. He needs to be good in 2019.

What exactly happened with Seahawks receiver Jaron Brown last year? It wasn’t like he didn’t score touchdowns. He had 5 of them on just 14 receptions. That is a really good percentage of touchdowns to catches. But he also didn’t seem to be trusted all that much by quarterback Russell Wilson.

In 2019, Brown played part in all 16 games and started two of them. Besides just having the 14 catches, he was only targeted 19 times. 8 of these targets came in the first three weeks of the season. Brown was also targeted just 6 times in the red zone but caught all of them. So why wasn’t Brown used more?

On Friday, Brown had a very good practice in training camp. Of course, there is not allowed to be any contact in the first two days of camp so while Brown was catching passes, he also didn’t have a cornerback or safety hanging all over him. Maybe Seattle didn’t see Brown as breaking away from contact last year?

Or possibly Wilson just had too much of a report built up with Tyler Lockett and Doug Baldwin. There may not have been room for Brown to work his way into the rotation once the fourth quarter started. Wilson wanted to go to Baldwin or Lockett more. Which makes sense because Lockett was great in 2018 and Baldwin was good for years before that.

But Baldwin has now been retired by the Seahawks and someone needs to replace him. Of course, no single person is going to do that. And rookies D.K. Metcalf and Gary jennings might simply be too young and inexperienced to step in early and consistently make big plays.

Brown is a big receiver at six-foot-three-inches and he isn’t slow. There isn’t any reason to throw to him more. Oddly, it is like Seattle suddenly realized Brown is on the team. He was last year too and just underused. If Brown can play a featured role in preseason and do great things, Seattle might just make him a much bigger part of the offense in the regular season. For Seattle to be very good this season, someone has to replace Baldwin and it could easily start with Brown.
