Three Seahawks that need to improve in week 4 versus Cardinals
By Lee Vowell
Michael Dickson
Dickson was an All Pro in his rookie season of 2018. He was everything that the Seahawks expected and the reason they drafted him in the fifth round. Dickson could pin teams back deep with punts that were far and with great hang time. Normally punters do not really slump, but the case could be that Dickson is doing so so far in 2019.
Last year, Dickson’s net average was 42.5 yards per punt. This ranked fifth in the league. In 2019, Dickson’s net is 39.2 yards per punt and this is 26th in the league. That isn’t good enough for someone drafted to be a defensive weapon. Dickson needs to help his team more.
The Saints ran a punt back for a touchdown in the first quarter of week three. A lot of the blame for being able to do so can be placed on Dickson. He punted the ball only 38 yards with little hang time. Deonte Harris had time to catch the ball, make a few moves and get to the end zone. The punt being short is one thing, but a short punt with good hang time should never be returned for a touchdown.
All season long Dickson has been inconsistent. He is averaging 46.6 yards per punt overall against his 48.2 yards per punt of 2019. Dickson has to be near-great every game for Seattle. Through three weeks he hasn’t been near-great and that needs to change starting in week four against the Cardinals.
